When you think of the 50's what do you think of? Do visions of sock hops,
50's clothing and Elvis come to mind? Well those were definitely there, but there were lots of other things to go along with those 50's clothing styles too. Kids have always needed something to do to keep themselves occupied, and you might be surprised that you might have used the same things now or in your youth. The following are just a few samplings of toys and games found in the 50's.
The hula hoop is a relatively simple concept. You take a hoop of plastic and get it to go around your waist without falling down. Now pulling it off may not quite as simple, but sure is fun to try and watch others do as well.
Who would have thought that picking up little plastic sticks could be so entertaining and fun? That is precisely what you try to do in pick up sticks. The catch is that you are not allowed to move any of the other pieces. The person who successfully can pick up the most sticks wins.
Do you remember your first
etch-a-sketch? Those were around in the 50's too. It is always fun to see what you can create by turning those two knobs. It is also fun to simply shake to erase and start over again?
Lincoln logs and tinker toys have been around for a really long time. They are enjoyed today as well as they were in the 50's and even before that. We can include other games that were around a long time before that such as Jacks, marbles, spinning tops, dolls and crayons.
Generally when we think of the 50's we think of 50's clothing and the music. It's fun to realize that they had other types of fun too. It is also fun to realize that we still enjoy many of those same things today. True we have our high tech devises, but maybe the best things are the things that don't change over time.
